Peter Morgan's Adventure
Location: Blue Diamond, NV
Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Blue Diamond Trails about 30 minutes west of Las Vegas is home to DeadHorse Loop and the famous 3 Mile Smile. Its mostly fast rocky single track with nothing super techy, but does have a few long climbs that are a bit of an aerobic exercise, especially if you aren’t used to the elevation and maybe were out at the casino the night before!

The long climbs lead to some nice fast downhills with some great flow to them. Watch out for the washes as they are filled with small pea gravel and sap your speed.

Satan’s Escalator is a fun steep climb that really pushes the heart and tests the legs.

As you make your way south higher, you reach Wilson Tank, with an overlook of Vegas in the distance (I could barely make it out through the early morning haze).

From the tank is the start of the famous 3 Mile Smile, a continous flowy down hill through the valley of the foothills. You drop all the elevation you worked so hard at from the start of the trail and its worth every drop of sweat! Shift to big ring, let go of the brakes, and embrace the speed! I hit 25mph on this section and was just flying over the features.

the trail dumps at a parking spot along the fire road, cross and take the trail back to the trailhead parking lot under 160.

Great before work ride!

Hints for this adventure: If you are flying into Vegas like I did, I recommend Las Vegas Cyclery and picking up one of their rentals. I had the Santa Cruz Superlite. It was a great XC/AM bike and well suited for these trails. You can also try McGhie's, but the hours are a little shorter, and the shop is in Blue Diamond, which might be a little harder to get to if you are short on time, but they do offer some 29ers which would be very well suited for this trail. I recommend getting out at sunrise and doing a ride and getting down before it heats up, and it is really quite pleasant. I think it was 70 when I started.

copperknobby's Adventure
Location: Copper Harbor, MI
Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Although a bit biased, have to say that some of the best mountain bike trails I’ve ever rode can be found in Copper Harbor, Michigan. Being designated as an IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) “Epic Ride” in October of 2009 (one currently of 53 “Epics” in the world, know that I am not alone in this belief! The 25+ mile trail network consists of sustained climbs and descents of up to 600′ vertical, bedrock, cobbled rock, extensive cedar-planked bridges and boardwalks and uncompromised views along the shore of Lake Superior. Thanks to the efforts of the non-profit Copper Harbor Trails Club, the trails are expertly maintained and continue to expand every season. Truely a MTB experience unique to the midwest which rivals some of the best in the entire country!

Terrace Oaks is a fun mountain bike trail suited for everyone. There is 2.5 miles of fast, rolling, but laid back, intermediate singletrack(there is some gravel XC ski doubletrack at the end). Also there’s: a few tight corners, 2 small rock gardens, a log ride, and a few other features thrown in for fun.
In addition there is a short but tricky expert part off of the XC doubletrack. It starts with a tight switchback that leads to a steep but quick climb; then there is a tight downhill switchback with roots and small rocks.

Terrace Oaks is a good trail for beginners and families wanting to get into mountain biking because you get a little of everything in a short distance. Its a great place if your looking for a quick workout or some fun.

Hints for this adventure: The expert part is on the left after the fist downhill on the gravel doubletrack. After a lot of rain, or a hard rain, the expert downhill part and the couple downhills on the gravel doubletrack can become washed out and sketchy; make sure Not to grab the brakes! morganp1234's Adventure
Location: Moab, UT
Difficulty Level: Advanced

Moab is the Mecca of all mountain biking. There is no other place like it!

The road trip out West is one of my favorite parts of the trip, what can I say, I’m a driver! It takes about 27 hours, and all the time in the car, you go a little stir crazy, thus, the corn monkey was born in the passing fields of Kansas. He would be our trip gremlin and mascot!

When we do arrive in Moab, the traditional trip starts out with a ride at Bartlett’s Wash, a large swath of sandstone slickrock, with no real trail, but mainly a place to practice and gain handling on the different terrain. When the sun goes down, we head back to camp and listen to the sounds of the corn monkey echo through the brush over a couple cold ones.

The second day is always the hottest day of the trip, doesnt matter what day of the year, when you go, its always the hottest day. Its also Slickrock day! The ground at slickrock is ancient petrified sand dunes. The ground is hard as concrete and round as 80grit sandpaper. There are inclines at slickrock that you can ride up that are should not be possible. Slickrock is all about physical fitness and endurance. It is not a technically demanding trail, but it will tax your core energy. And get out of there before high noon, unless you want to roast. There is no shade on the trail, the corn monkeys took all the trees and put them in a tree museum.

Day 3 is hike day! Drive out to Arches and hike the 3 miles one way to Delicate Arch. It really is something to behold and an amazing piece of natural art. Devil’s Garden takes you past Landscape arch and a few others that are breath taking. The arches are rock, which seems indestructible, but are continually evolving and nature will eventually crumble them and return to the canyon floor. Or the corn monkeys get to them first, either way, go see them before they are gone!

Day 4 is the best day ever, The Whole Enchilada trail. You start early in the morning and get shuttled up 11,000 feet into the La Sal Mountains out side of Moab, and from there its an all day, 30mile, 7000 foot elevation change, rollercoaster! The trail is comprised of these individual trails: Burro Pass, Hazard, Kokopelli, UPS, LPS, and Porcupine Rim. There is every type of riding imaginable in this trail! From big hit jumps in Hazard County, to fast double track in Kokopelli, twisty technical single track in the UPS/LPS, and flatout awesomeness in the Porcupine Rim trail. All the while you are riding along and over looking Castle Valley, with shear 1000 foot drops to the canyon floor. Corn monkeys only wish they were cool enough to ride here.

day 5 is the most technical of rides, at Amasa Back. It is all table top rock climbs and scrambles, and honestly, a lot of hike-a-bike. By the time you are done climbing a few thousand feet to where the trail crests, you are beat, then realize you are only 25% of the way in, and only corn monkeys are quitters! the trail continues along a canyon carved by the Colorado and out along rocky out croppings that only bikers get to see and experience. The trail is 10 miles out and back, and the return trip is by far the sweet reward for the pain it inflicts on the climb. Man up, grab on to your bars, and point you bike downhill, its a wild ride! All those troubling climbs are now awesome jumps!

Last day, pack up camp, lick our wounds, and head home.

Why is Kansas so flat and boring!!!!!

Hints for this adventure: Moab is in the high desert of Utah. Temperatures during the summer get really hot, so early spring or late fall are some of the best times to go, I'd probably recommend spring so you get all the blooming flora and the occasional afternoon rain shower. Bring plenty of sun protection and water! Definitely do the Whole Enchilada Trail! It offers one of the best rides and the most amazing views! If it is your first time to Moab, you must do Slickrock! I think its a law or something. Zax Woodfired Pizza is a great after ride meal. Its all you can eat pizza buffet! You'll probably scarf down about 5 pies before you even know it! You'll need your strength to battle the corn monkeys.

The White River State Trail is a great cycling trail for families. It provides a protected environment for children to get some cycling distance under their belts, and has beautiful views of the Wisconsin landscape. We often see a variety of birds, as well as wildflowers and livestock, and Peddle and Cup coffee shop offers a nice pit stop about halfway through.

Hints for this adventure: The surface is pressed gravel. It is not a difficult surface, and it has less traffic than paved trails we have used. But Mom and Dad should leave the road bikes at home and bring the hybrid instead.

The Glacial Drumlin Trail runs from Waukesha to Madison. It’s a great place for a family ride. The trail does cross roads, but there is enough space between crossings that kids can have the freedom to practice their riding skills.

Hints for this adventure: We often take our children out on this trail and stop at local parks along the way. It's a great distraction from the length of the ride for the kids and good opportunity to stop for snacks and drinks. The trail is also great for building up spinning endurance for road bikers.
